The Blues aim to light up Suburbs Rugby Club in West Auckland when we take on the Chiefs in a free pre-season match this Friday.
Sponsored by Westie Pies, the pre-season game will be your last chance to see the team in action before we kick off the 2017 Investec Super Rugby Championship against the Rebels on February 23 in Melbourne.
It’ll begin with a moment’s silence for much-loved former All Blacks and Chiefs loose forward Sione Lauaki, who passed away recently, before the game kicks off at the earlier time of 5:00pm.
The match is sure to feature lots of free-flowing and fast-running rugby as both sides look to cap off the pre-season in the best possible way.
The Blues showed tons of promise last time out against the Hurricanes, an exciting pre-season encounter at our home base. Although we were eventually pipped 38-33, our boys dominated the reigning Super Rugby champs for long periods of time and offered glimpses of an exciting season ahead.
Meanwhile, a Chiefs side missing many of its top players was out-scored four tries to one in its first pre-season match against the Bulls in Brisbane last week, eventually losing to the South African side 28-7.
But they won’t have the same excuse on Friday night, as both teams’ All Blacks are expected to be available to play.
Blues head coach Tana Umaga commented: “It is an ideal chance to test our systems ahead of the season-proper. And as a group we are really pleased to be able to do this out in the community with a free game.”
As well as the exciting rugby action, there will also be food trucks, a sausage sizzle, free pies courtesy of Westie Pies, and a signing session after the game.
So clear your schedule for Friday evening and make sure you’re at Suburbs Rugby Club, 200 Portage Road, New Lynn, Auckland.
We’ll see you there.
