Strong opener

The Blues had a superb start to the season by beating the Crusaders 24–22 at Eden Park. They followed this with a win and a loss on the South African tour, and a thrilling 22-all draw against the Western Force in Perth.

Blues hit mid-season streak

The Blues then hit overdrive with seven straight victories over the Hurricanes twice, the Chiefs in Hamilton, the Warratahs twice, the Rebels and the Highlanders. Round 13 proved unlucky with a 37-31 loss to the Reds in Brisbane, a 28-26 loss to the Stormers and 16-11 loss to the Chiefs, both at home and 23-16 loss to the Crusaders away.

Victory over Highlanders

The Blues managed an outstanding 33-16 victory at home in their final game over the Highlanders to secure the side’s first playoff appearance since 2007 and first home playoff match since 2003.

Through to the semi-finals

They beat the Waratahs 26–13 to secure a semifinal against the Queensland Reds in Brisbane which they lost 30–13.
