Auckland-born, Mount Albert Grammar graduate, Sonny Bill Williams developed in Rugby League. He first represented the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs when he was 19, where his devastating defence and offloading ability made him a cult-hero in the sport.

He took his exceptional skillset to France in 2008 to play for Tana Umaga’s Toulon side before signing to New Zealand Rugby in 2010. He played for Canterbury and the Crusaders in 2011 as well as the All Blacks victorious 2011 Rugby World Cup campaign. Sonny won his first Super Rugby title with the Chiefs in 2012 before a brief stint in Japan.

Sonny moved back to rugby league in 2013 to honour a promise, playing for the Sydney Roosters. He was voted the best player in the world as the Roosters claimed the 2013 NRL title and became back-to-back Minor Premiers during the 2014 season.

Sonny moved back to rugby with Counties Manukau in 2014 and the Chiefs in 2015 before playing for the All Blacks in the back-to-back Rugby World Cup title in England that year.

He moved to Sevens in 2015-16 where he was selected for the All Black Sevens that included competing at the Rio Olympics where he suffered an Achilles injury that required surgery.

He now back home with the Blues. With 50 All Blacks test caps to his name, he is rated one of the most professional players in either code, and at 194 cm and 108 kg, he is an unstoppable midfield force with extraordinary passing skills. The 2019 season, with the World Cup beckoning, will be an important one for Sonny, and the Blues.
