An emotional Blues captain Keven Mealamu fronted the hordes of media that had descended on the Blues training base at Unitec today to apologise on behalf of his players for the fact Pat Lam’s coaching position is being advertised.
This is what he had to say:
“I stand here as a leader of the Blues team and I just want to say a few words on what’s happened with coach.
I think from the players’ point of view we’re pretty disappointed, we let coach down and we failed him.
Not through effort but through execution on the field. We all turn up here prepared and ready to face each week but it’s been one of those things this year that we’ve just struggled.
Probably what makes it even tougher now is that we’ve left coach in this situation which is the last thing we want to do.†
I know coach is a proud Blues and Auckland man brought up in this region and we’re disappointed that we haven’t been able to look after him on the field.
Obviously coach is responsible for preparing us but at the end of the day we as players have the responsibility of going out there and getting the result done.
This is my point of view being the captain of the Blues and we’re just disappointed we haven’t been able to do it for coach and that he’s in this situation.”
