After a two-week break from team training, the squad is back together at Blues HQ to continue the pre-season grind together.
The morning started off with a 1200-metre Bronco running test, followed by fitness and skills training. First five speedster Piers Francis took out the post-Christmas fitness title, finishing his bronco in 4 min 29.
Head Strength and Conditioning coach Jason Price said the squad had returned in good nick, with some improving on their pre-Christmas fitness levels and showing hard training through the holiday festivities.
“We built a lot of momentum pre-Christmas and they haven’t lost that,” said Jason. “Some made great improvements, so I’m really happy with where they’re at.”
Players like wing Afa Fa’atau, shaved two minutes off his pre-Christmas fitness test on the first morning back.
According to loose forward Steven Luatua, this morning’s fitness session was “the toughest running block we’ve had.” He also noted the team’s fitness and willingness to dive into the new year’s training.
“It’s just one day at a time here, but everyone’s in a really good mood,” said Steven. “After the new years break, the team is feeling fresh.”
Steven’s training over the break was similar to much of the team – fitness based, coupled with strength and weights work.
The team will continue their pre-Christmas programme focusing on speed and power in high volume over the next four weeks.
