BEST & FAIREST (Selected by Mediaworks)
5 Points: Akira Ioane
Young man with immense potential showed some of those skills tonight. Broke tackles at will, off-loaded, was strong in the tackle and scored a solo try that will be in the highlights reels for sure.
3 Points: Brendon O’Connor
Week-in, week-out the best Blues forward on the park. Tonight he not only made the tackles and forced some excellent turnovers, but he carried the ball with purpose and power.
1 Point: Melani Nanai
Eye-catching display from a young player who forced his way into the starting line-up from the Wider Training Group. Showed speed and strength, and scored one of the show-stoppers tonight.
WHAT THE COACH HAD TO SAY:
I thought there was some good footy played and happy to take the five points. We gave a few soft tries in the last 10 minutes and we have had a busy night for the medic which forced a lot of changed. They hung in and got the job done. We had an excellent week in training and those passes stuck tonight.
Sir John Kirwan
WHAT THE PLAYERS HAD TO SAY:
Akira is pretty impressive. What we have been driving into the young players is to go out and express themselves. We did not want the effects of the season to burden them. Akira was great tonight and so was Melani.
For me the injury looks a lot worse than it is, I hope. It could be from two to eight weeks so I am hoping for the best. It is the first time I have experienced anything like this. My finger got stuck in the jersey of a player who went one way when I sent the other.
