The Palmerston North player earned his first class debut for Manawatu as a teenager in 2014, and became a key part of their success in winning the Championship and earning promotion to the Premiership in 2015.

He received a call-up to the Hurricanes wider training group in 2015, making his debut following a Beauden Barrett injury.

Otere was a key player for the New Zealand Under-20 side in their World Rugby Junior World Championship triumph in 2015. He was selected for the Maori All Blacks at just 20 years old, for the tour to Fiji, playing in the international and also against the NZ Barbarians.
