Michael Jones, another of Auckland’s most legendary players who, like Brooke and Fitzpatrick, was a veteran when the Super 12 started. The great loose forward managed 36 matches in 1996-99. He was captain in 1998 and will be remembered for his intercept try in the 1998 final that clinched victory against the Brumbies.

In 1986 Jones made his first national side, playing one cap for Samoa. He was then able to switch allegiance to the All Blacks from 1987 to 1998, earning 55 caps in the process.
