Born in Timaru but raised in Waimate, this talented halfback has been something of a rugby nomad in New Zealand. He played collegiate rugby in Christchurch for Shirley Boys High School before a move to Nelson College for his final year.

Billy made his debut in the ITM Cup with North Otago, earning 29 caps over three years before returning to Nelson in 2013 to join the Tasman Makos.

His performance with the Makos earned Guyton a spot in the Hurricanes Wider Training Group, making his Super Rugby debut against the Waratahs in 2014. He then moved south to join the Crusaders in 2015 as a replacement player, before again standing out for Tasman in 2015. That earned him selection to the Blues where his experience on and off the field proved invaluable.

He played in all but one game for the Blues in 2016, often with the important closing role, scoring two tries.
