The National Development Squad (NDS) of the Japan Rugby Football Union will tour New Zealand this month.
The side, known as Japan A will meet Blues A, in a curtain raiser for Blues vs Highlanders match, at Eden Park on Friday 20 April.
Japan A allows fringe players to the Japan national side as well as the Hito-Communications Sunwolves Super Rugby side the opportunity to press for higher honours.
Blues General Manager High Performance, Tony Hanks says;
“Our Development playing programme is a critical factor in achieving the club objective to enhance aspiration for players in the region by providing them with playing opportunities and a chance to impress. We’ve completed our regular season fixtures (Under 20s and A Team) so the chance to pick up an international opponent was too good to pass up.”
With great support from our provincial unions and clubs, a representation of our region’s best talent will join some of our contracted players next Friday night. There is obviously a lot of interest in Japan with the 2019 World Cup just around the corner, so this is a chance to see the next generation of Japanese stars also. We look forward to welcoming the Japan A side and all their staff next week”
